The Icon is an 18-storey apartment block situated in Cape Town’s foreshore. Designed by DHK, the building is well situated near the bottom of Cape Town’s famous Long & Loop streets.
Kantey & Templer worked closely together with its BEE partner Letshabile who were appointed for the lateral support, structural, civils, roads and traffic impact assessment for The Icon. The full Letshabile team that was responsible for this project was eventually incorporated into Kantey and Templer.
The building consists of 2 basement levels for parking, a ground floor level for retail, 4 storeys mixed offices and parking, and 14 storeys of residential apartments. The facades/wall panels were formed from custom precast concrete panels, detailed by K&T, of which there was a large variety of different configurations.
The biggest challenge on this job was to design the reinforced concrete structure of the building in such a way as to optimise the many functions of the building. This required a transfer level for beams on the 4th level to allow for new column layouts to serve the residential component above.
